Aadmi (1939)

This review is written by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh

The film Aadmi was a remake of the record breaking marathi Film ‘Manoos’(1938), also made by Shantaram, with the same starcast.

Aadmi’s Hero is Moti (Shahu Modak-a Jew by birth), who is a Police Constable. He falls in love with Kesar(Shanta Hublikar) ,who is a Kothewali girl. Kesar detests her singing profession and wants to quit. Moti’s family is very conservative. His old mother gives her consent for the marriage, without knowing who is the girl. When Kesar visits Moti’s mother and sees the family set up, she realises that she canot fit into it. She goes away etc etc.

The point I want to make here is ,in those days Shantaram was lauded for depecting the human side of the Policeman and for trying to bring to the notice of the society that Policemen also have natural feelings, like other members of the society.

The entire focus was only on depicting the human aspect, and it had nothing to do with Devdas mentality. Personally,I dont think that angle was behind this movie at all.

It is true that there is a scene where the Hero,Moti is dejected and wants to have drinks, and his wellwishers prevent him from doing so saying, Drinks do not solve problems, they add to it. But the story revolves around the human aspect mainly.

RAM PURUSHOTHAMDAS MARATHE born in 1927 in Pune, joined Jayant films and then Prabaht. He became the lead actor in Prabhat’s GOPALKRISHNA in 1938 and then acted in Aadmi-1939.

He was trained in music by Vilayat Khan, Mirashibuwa,Barve, Master krishnarao etc and later was a vocalist of Gwalior,Jaipur and Agra Gharana.

He acted in Hindi Marathi and Gujarati films for 30 years. He was very famous on Marathi stage.
He died in 1989.

AAG AUR DAAG-1971 was actually a very interesting film, but due to poor acting and direction,it did not become a hit, though the story and music was good.

All 3 go to the sea,but the mother could not drag her son to death and Raja has to see his parents die before his eyes.Madanlal brings him up reminding him all the while to take revenge.

Aage Badho (1947)

This review is written by Sudhir Kapur

This movie was considered very much ahead of its times, because it dramatized a very delicate theme, that of widow remarriage. That explains the title of the movie. In 1947, this was too progressive a theme for the society of that time.

Dev Anand is indeed the lead actor / hero, named Udai, in the movie, opposite to Khursheed, who plays the role of Sarla. The other two names i.e. Vasant Thengdi and Kusum Deshpande play the roles of Sarla’s parents, Badri Prasad and Jamuna. Jamuna is the step mother to Sarla (in fact Badri Prasad’s third wife). Badri Prasad is an “aiyaash” (playboy) type person, which explains his multiple marriages, and his ongoing extra-marital flings.

Sarla’s marriage is fixed. The wedding takes place, but a fireworks accident happens on the evening of the wedding, after the ceremony is solemnized, and the newlywed groom dies in this accident. Sarla is a widow, even before her doli leaves her home. After this accident, her step mother treats her even worse. In fact the step mother’s brother makes advances towards Sarla; she resists, and in turn is blamed for trying to seduce him. Sarla is shocked, she runs away and tries to commit suicide. Udai (Dev Anand) saves her from the river, and brings her to his village and home. Udai is person of progressive thinking. He takes care of her, and he encourages Sarla to think of getting married again.

The rest of the story is about the relationship that develops between Sarla and Udai, plus a complex narrative of tragic sequences; but eventually ending with “happily ever after”.

Regarding Khursheed herself; the actress – singer Khursheed Bano started her film career in 1931 and worked in Hindi movies till 1948, whereafter she migrated to Pakistan. She passed away in 2001 in Karachi.
